A Well Trained Dog Deserves A Reward

Posted by Jocke

Article by Cayla Young

Rewards can be praise, treats, play, or anything that the dog finds rewarding. Reward or praise your dog for a good performance. It has been shown in animal behavioral science and among most trainers that dogs and other animals work better for reward than out of fear of the handler.

Reward

If the handler sometimes says "good" as a reward marker and sometimes as a keep going signal, it is difficult for the dog to know when he has earned a reward. It is important to note that the dog's reward is not the same as the reward marker. The reward marker is a signal that tells the dog that he has earned the reward. Many novice dog owners make the mistake of using effusive verbal praise as both a reward marker and a reward, which can confuse dog and owner. Failure to reward after the reward marker diminishes the value of the reward marker and makes training more difficult. In particular, mechanical clickers are frequently used for the reward marker. "Positive training methods" generally means preferring the use of reward-based training to increase good behavior over that of physical punishment to decrease bad behavior. The more rewarding a dog finds a particular reinforcer, the more work he will be prepared to do in order to obtain the reinforcer.

Trained

Dogs do not figure out basic obedience on their own; they must be trained. Dogs that are handled and petted by humans regularly during the first eight weeks of life are generally much more amenable to being trained and living in human households. Note that not all dogs are trained to voice command. Many working breeds of dog are not trained to a voice command at all; they are taught to obey a combination of whistles and hand signals. Dogs are also trained for specific purposes, including: Detection dogs Assistance dogs Herding dogs, livestock guardian dogs, and sheep dogs hunting dogs Police dogs Rescue dogs Schutzhund German for "protection dog". A well-trained guard dog protects person, property or objects on command and "turns-off" on command as well. Properly trained animals will guard on command and then when commanded to "out" will approach and accept in a friendly manner those that may have attempted to gain entry, cause harm or steal protected items. Assistance dogs, such as guide and hearing dogs, are carefully trained to utilize both their sensory skills and the protective instincts of dogs (as pack animals) to bond with a human and help that person to offset a disability in daily life. A trained dog is a content, balanced and happy dog. ) However, it does show what dogs are capable of, and this includes all dogs, hence the reason we believe all dogs should be trained in basic emergency stop and down commands, which even these dogs don't seem to know too well.

Once your dog is well trained you will find that you involve him in the family events more often and this alone will mean more exercise and better health for your dog. Bottom line is that a properly exercised and trained dog will bring you and your family more pleasure and for more years.

Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Dog Training

Posted by Jocke

Article by Philip Roberts

Dog training is a vital part of being a responsible dog owner. Working with your dog brings better understanding between the two of you. This article can help you with your dog training. Your dog is eager to do things to please you and you need to take the time to show him how to behave.

You must enforce any command you give when training your dog. Giving a command that you are not confident in or not willing to follow through with diminishes your role as leader. Do not ask, beg or scream. Give firm commands in a dominant tone and expect the dog to give the appropriate behavior. Your dog will see you as a true leader when you follow through.

Teach your dog to smile! Dogs sometimes bare their teeth not just when they are being aggressive but also when they are excited and happy. You can reinforce that behavior by repeating the command "smile" every time they behave in that manner. Just make sure people that they are around realize they aren't being aggressive.

In order to train a well-mannered dog you should always be consistent with your punishments. If you let your dog get away with a particular bad behavior when you normally punish him for it, then your dog will be more likely to revert to bad behavior in general and not as likely to listen to your commands in the future.

Teach your dog the command "drop it" to get things out of his mouth. This is very important because it could help save your belongings if your dog grabs it, and it could even save your dog's life if he grabs something dangerous. The trick is to offer him something even better in exchange for the item he picked up. Practice this with your dog and you'll be able to retrieve anything from his mouth - he might even start offering it to you!

Participating in a group class can be a very effective way to train your dog. Group classes are almost always less expensive than individual training sessions. They also offer your dog the opportunity to socialize with other pets. Look for a smaller group though, so that you still have plenty of one on one interaction with the trainer.

If you live near a body of water, whether a river, lake, stream or pond, and have a dog, make certain your dog knows how to swim and knows how to get himself safely out of the water. Surprisingly enough, not all dogs possess the ability to swim and even for those that do, they might be taken by surprise by a river's current or waves and tides. Take care to test your dog's swimming ability in a variety of water conditions for their safety and your peace of mind.

When housebreaking a dog it is quite important for him to know that when he went potty outside that you are proud of him. Give him a treat and some attention as soon as he has done his business. Do not just let him go about his business while you go about yours.

Crate training your dog should be approached gradually and patiently. By slowly accustoming the dog to the crate, you allow him to see it as his den. Once the dog views the crate as a safe space, not a place of punishment, he will gladly relax in his crate while you are away from home.

The type of leash, collar, and harness are very important to take into consideration when training a dog. The bigger the dog the more secure these items will need to be. Also if one has a dog that pulls on the leash a harness should be used to control the animal opposed to a choke chain or collar. The right equipment is essential to dog training.

As already noted, dog training can be vital. Responsible dog owners take the time to work with their dogs and train them. Applying the information in this article, can help with dog training and help you to become a better dog owner. Working with your dog can build a better relationship, that will ensure that he will truly be your best friend.
