Everything You Need to Know About Dog Heat Stroke

Posted by Jocke

Article by Bob Hamilton

Dogs are not capable of tolerating heat as well as their human counterparts. Heat stroke in dogs is an emergency condition. You will need to treat your dog promptly or else he can possibly collapse and die.

Dog heat stroke is particularly a problem in younger and older dogs. Dogs that are also overweight have an increased risk. Canines with a double coat are also susceptible to heat stroke, as well as those which have been bred to stay in colder climates.

One of the main causes of this condition is leaving him in the car during hot weather. Dogs that exert themselves too much during hot weather may also develop the condition. If you chain your dog on a concrete run during a hot day, the concrete will absorb the heat and your dog may become overheated. Canines that suffer from conditions affecting the airway can also develop it.

If your dog is experiencing this condition, you will notice him start breathing rapidly and noisily. His heart rate will increase, his saliva will become thick, and he may even vomit. If you do not treat the dog quickly, he becomes progressively worse. Soon, he will collapse and fall into a coma. He may die soon after doing so.

If you notice the signs of dog heat stroke, then you need to get your dog to a cooler area as soon as possible. You need to take your dog's temperature with a rectal thermometer. If it is less than 104 degrees Fahrenheit, you can cool him down in an air-conditioned room.

You can also hose him down with cool water or use cool towels. If the situation is very severe, you may need to soak your dog in a bathtub full of cold water in order to lower his temperature.

There are certain things that you can do to prevent dog heat stroke. Never leave your dog confined to a hot car on hot days. Also, make sure that he always has plenty of water to drink during the summer months. It is a good idea to make sure he has shade available to cool off whenever necessary.

Heat stroke in dogs is a very serious condition. If you notice the signs, then you will need to treat your dog immediately. If you do not, he may collapse and die. Try hosing him down with cool water or covering him up with wet towels until his temperature drops back down to normal. Be sure to contact your veterinarian as quickly as possible if you suspect heat stroke.

Emmylou Harris performs her song "Big Black Dog" outside The Groove in East Nashville, Tenn., as part of Record Store Day 2010. I missed the first 20 seconds or so of Emmylou telling the story of her dog rescue organization, Bonaparte's Retreat, named for the dog who was her travelling companion for 11 years, but the rest of the performance is all right here.
